The one thing I miss about living in Ontario are the deciduous trees (trees that turn colour such as oak, maple and elm trees). They are absolutely stunning in the fall! This past weekend I spent the weekend in Ontario with my family for Canadian Thanksgiving and convinced them to go on a bit of a photo walk. Full photoset can be found here.
Looking for some inspiration, I stumbled on the National Geographic "Photo of the Day" website. It really is everything you would expect from them - - absolutely awesome!!!
This is from today's post: October 8, 2014 Inside Out Photograph by Ragnheidur Arngrímsdóttir “Flying with my father over Bárðarbunga to experience this eruption from inside our Earth was amazing,” writes photographer Ragnheidur Arngrímsdóttir, who captured this picture near Iceland’s Holuhraun lava field. “The power, heat, and beauty were overwhelming. On many occasions you feel how small you are [beside] nature. This was one of those times for me.” This photo was submitted to the 2014 National Geographic Photo Contest. I decided to bring my camera along because of the stunning photography opportunities ... however - when I got home everything was super overexposed!!! My white balance was off and the colours were also blending into each other. With a little help from Adobe Lightroom 4 I was able to salvage the photoset but definitely learned my lesson to take a little more time and play with all of the settings before just snapping a few shots and keep hiking!
Check out the video and the pics that I took this past weekend on the West Reef at Passage Island in Howe Sound, Vancouver, BC. In 2002 I met a lady named Margaret Benson. Little did I know at the time that she would end up being such a huge part of my life! Back then I was coaching rowing and she needed a coach for The World Transplant Games. You see, Margaret has CF (cystic fibrosis) and when she was diagnosed with the disease as a teenager, her life expectancy was only about 25. Not Margaret. 10 years ago she got a new pair of lungs and for her 50th birthday she definitely celebrated as only Margaret can!
This week on Tuesday Rocky Mountaineer hosted their usual 800 passengers on the train with 40 very special people.... All of these people are organ recipients; the youngest was a baby when she received hers!! So, Margaret asked me to come down for the send off. You can find the full photoset HERE; but here are a couple of images from the very early morning! There is an art and science when it comes to taking pictures at night... and a bit of luck. Last night we went on a hunt for the Northern Lights that reportedly were going to appear over Vancouver. We never saw any but we did find a quiet beach on the shores of Howe Sound to take some great night shots. All of these we shot using the bulb setting on my Nikon with varying iso and f-stop settings. Super fun hanging out with 3 other photographers for this very late evening and trying some crazy stuff with lights! Full photoset can be found HERE on my flickr page.
Between Scuba Diving, Field Hockey 50th Anniversary and the Super Moon - I have spent HOURS at my computer processing pictures.... However, nothing beats the 1740 photos that I took last weekend at the bottom of Taylor Way in West Vancouver for the start of the Whistler GranFondo!
